About Us
Whether you want to watch, learn, buy or do-it-yourself – or all of the above! – the Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Festival has everything to fit your style and adventure-level. Featuring local Chinese and pan-Asian performances, activities and shops, this bustling festival turns South Side River Front Park into Pittsburgh’s own China Town. While you’re there, you can watch any number of performances while you enjoy something delicious from one (or two or three…) of the food booths. Of course, on your way out, browse along the Dragon Stroll to see available jewelry, clothing, fans, art and much more. With so many great finds, you’ll never be able to leave empty handed!
The event officially opens
with the exciting Dragon Dance, followed by performances courtesy of the many
Asian-American cultural groups in the Pittsburgh area representing their
homelands of Japan, India, China, Korea, Tuva (Mongolia), and more.
Visitors can watch and/or
participate in demonstrations of various ancient arts including Ikebana
(Japanese flower arranging), Origami (paper folding), Chinese Calligraphy
(Chinese characters), and others.
Meet Fuwa, the official mascot of the Beijing Olympics and sample the
cuisine of the many Asian food booths.
Kids will enjoy Storytelling,
courtesy of State Farm Insurance, or the Westinghouse Electric Company
Children's Area, for interactive activities and crafts. Mom and dad can browse the many booths
along the Dragon Stroll where shoppers will find gemstone jewelry, Asian-inspired
textiles, lanterns, fans and more.
The event is supported
in part by Dominion and grants from the Pennsylvania Department of Tourism, the
Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Culture Center of Taipei Economic
& Cultural Office in New York.
